What Are the Best Travel Apps?
Are you trying to find useful travel apps to help you make the most of your adventures abroad? In this post, we’re listing the best travel apps to make your travel life easy.
Whym
When translation is reaching a new level…
Mister Google Translate might be a handy friend, but… he can also put you in awkward situations. Not that I don’t appreciate these kinds of moments (I love them), but sometimes, you just don’t want to be lost, who doesn’t like to have the straight-to-the-point-answer hassle-free? (Or is it just me?)
Whym connects you to a friendly interpreter who will do your best to help you out. Unless you speak every language, this app should be a useful tool for every emergency situation.
So, how does it work?
You download the app. You pick a language (they currently have 13 languages available), you buy interpreter minutes and you call them when you need to.
Simple? Yes. More, please!
Why would it be a life saver?
If I looking back to my worst travel experiences, I think Whym would have been very useful. It would have been easier to sort out this crazy story in Turkey or to help me out across Asia without getting lost nonstop. Then, picture yourself in the worst situation on a trip, would it be handy? If your answer is no, you might have to read this again!
Maps.me
Did I mention enough about my strong capacity at getting lost? It’s not me. It’s them. Okay, it might be my fault too… In Asia, addresses can be so hard to find. First, you’ll need to find the street name and then if you are lucky enough there should be some numbers out there. And if you have good karma that day, they should also be in order!
Am I kidding here? No way! I got lost more than I can even remember. My problem is; what should I do without Google Maps or even without Wi-Fi?
Maps.me is a great tool that works offline! You just need to download the map of your next destination and then, you’re on your way! You can create itineraries, save interesting places on your map and you should be able to get there.
Travello
Are you traveling alone? Are you looking for travel mates or temporary friends? You tried Tinder and Happn and you would like to try something travel-related?
Travello connects you to other travelers nearby. You can pick your new friends by looking at their profile, their interests or their travel plans.
You can also check out the notice board to know what’s going on nearby and elsewhere.
Hostelworld, Booking.com and Agoda
Those are the three tools you need to be able to book your accommodation on the road. It is completely worth looking at the prices and comparing as you could find a better deal with one or the other. The process is easy. There’s nothing else to say about this. Just enjoy!
Skyscanner
This is one of my favorite hobbies.
Pick a month. Choose everywhere. And find the cheapest (and the sweetest) deal! You can also consult these tips to find cheaper flights.
XE Currency
If you intend to visit more than one destination, it’s going to be easy to get confused in all those different currencies.
Here I was, waking up in the minivan in Thailand. I was just coming out of Myanmar. Both currencies are so different, but I still had my Myanmar rate mindset. And there I was, at the ATM taking out half of my bank account. Don’t be me. Use XE Currency. This was the only time I didn’t use it and look what happened.
So, no dramas; this app will help you figure the new currency exchange out!
Duolingo
Are you going abroad long-term? Are you planning to learn the language? Duolingo might be for you! It is a great way to learn the basics of a new language, especially, if you are starting from scratch. They offer different languages and you can learn by playing around with the app. It might take a while to be fluent, but it sure is way cheaper than taking a course!
BEFORE YOU GO
☑ Book your flight: If your flight isn’t booked yet – check out the flights on Skyscanner or via Google Flights. My top saving tip is flexibility. If you’re flexible, you should be able to find a cheaper flight.
☑ Book your accommodation: I always use Airbnb and Booking.com. If you’d rather stay in a hostel, you should take a look at the options on Hostelworld. If you click on the Airbnb link and you don’t have an account yet – you’ll get a $30 discount on your first booking.
☑ Protect your cute face: Oh, you may want to protect your cute face with a travel medical insurance. I would suggest SafetyWing as they offer the best rates, especially for long-term travelers. Otherwise, you can also take a look at World Nomads.
☑ Pack the essentials: You can consult this list when it’s time to pack your bag! Do not leave without a universal charger, a power bank and your passport!
☑ Do you need a visa? If you aren’t sure if you need a visa, it would be a smart idea to take a quick look before you go. You can use iVisa – it’s super useful and easy to use.
