Where to Stay in Canggu, Bali | Hostels, Hotels & Airbnbs

If you’re wondering where to stay in Canggu, I hope this helps you. This article covers the best places to stay in Canggu as well as the best accommodation options including hostels, homestays, Airbnb, boutique hotels, villas, surf camps and yoga retreats! Finding the best accommodation in Canggu doesn’t have to be hard!

If you’re wondering where to stay in Bali, staying in Canggu should be on your Bali itinerary!  Canggu is definitely one of the cool places to stay in Bali. It all started two years ago when I visited Bali for the first time. I fell for the chill vibes, boho atmosphere and the waves! Canggu is a big hub for expats, backpackers and surfer holidaymakers. Great for its coffee scene, bars on the beach and for sunset lovers, there’s a lot to love about Canggu!

To help you make the most of your stay in Canggu, check out the sections towards the end to learn more about the best restaurants & cafΓ©s in Canggu as well as the best places where to hang out! Also, I’m sharing some of my best tips to get a cheap way out of the airport and to help you get a good scooter and a SIM card at a decent price!

First of all, let’s see what are the best areas to stay in Canggu. I personally love Berawa Beach better as it’s a bit less crowded and it’s surrounded by amazing restaurants and cafΓ©s. Although, if you want to be closer to the bars or if you want to walk to the beach instead of renting a scooter, you should pick a spot around Batu Bolong Beach. If you only care about surfing in Bali, you might want to stay around Echo Beach. Finding the best area in Canggu is an easy task because the town is quite small!

If you’re also wondering how long you should stay in Canggu, there’s this weird curse about this tiny beach town. It seems like people have difficulty to leave Canggu. There’s not so much to see apart from enjoying life on the beach while sipping a coconut. If you’re here to party, learn how to surf or simply get a tan, then, you could easily spend a week (or more) in Canggu. If you’re planning on making the most of Indonesia while you’re here, then, you should come around for a few days.

Of course, if you’re planning on staying in Canggu, you might want to be close to the beach! There are many options available around Berawa Beach, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach.  Some villas and cheaper options could be a bit further out, but if you have a scooter, you can pretty much go everywhere in approximately 10-20 minutes, as Canggu is quite a small town!

Black’N’White – The best spot on Batu Bolong Beach

This one isn’t on the map as it’s basically a restaurant directly on the beach. To get there, the easiest option is to get to the beach from Old Man’s Restaurant.  As soon as you go down the stairs head left and walk around five minutes. You’ll see that this restaurant is a lot bigger than the others. There are sun chairs and bean bags as well as proper tables to eat in the shade.

DKM Dapoer Kismanika – Best local restaurant

Imagine eating for INR 10 000 or as little as INR 15 000. DKM is the best local food I found around Canggu especially considering their very cheap prices. It’s hard to spot on the road as it’s a busy one, but you can now find them on GoogleMap.

District or the Outpost – Best Co-Working Environment

View this post on Instagram

This delicious bowl can be found at C’Ugh, the newest kid on the block in Canggu. More than just a cafe, this restaurant/co working space boasts a wonderful menu free of sugar and the restaurant itself is free of plastic. With menu options like this Acai Bowl and beautiful views over the rice paddies, we are expecting big things from C’Ugh!

The best resto-bar in town is definitely Old Man’s Restaurant. Happy hours are from 5pm to 6pm where you can get two drinks for the price of one! And the best things is… it happens every day!  Every night, you’ll meet a bunch of people, expats, travelers and locals hanging out at Old Man’s. They are well known for their Dirty Old Man Wednesday, which is their best night of the week! Of course, every single night, something is happening there, whether it’s a live band, or just any other night, you’re guaranteed to meet new friends and to have a great evening!

Getting your essentials in Canggu | SIM cards, useful apps, laundry & motorbike rentals

Getting a SIM card in Canggu, Bali

If you’re sticking around Bali for a while, you might want to get a SIM card.  I found very decent prices at Happy Cell, where you can get SIM cards from different providers such as XL (the cheapest option) or Tekomsel (best signal around Bali). To give you a rough idea, you can expect to pay around IDR 27 000 for 4 GB and IDR 57 000 for 15 GB. Buying a SIM card at Denpasar Airport would be a lot more expensive, but handy of course.

From now on, it seems that everybody has to register their SIM cards within 15 days after their purchase. You can either find a local friend to help you register via SMS, or simply go to one of the provider’s stores, which is likely located in Kuta.

Useful Apps in Bali | Getting to Canggu from the airport

My favorite app in Bali is Go-Jek, which is a go-to for everything you could possibly need; a motorbike ride, a car ride, a massage or even food delivery.  There’s a lot more available, so you should definitely check it out!

Another good alternative would be Grab, but I found Go-Jek to be a lot cheaper unless you’re seeking a longer motorbike drive that is more than 25KM.

When you’re getting out of the airport, the cheapest option to get to Canggu is by Go-Jek. If you only have a backpack, you can order a motorbike and if your backpack or suitcase is too heavy, you should go for the car ride.

They can’t pick up you directly at the airport, but you can walk to the motorbike parking lot, where you can find all the driver for Go-Jek and Grab. If you don’t have any data yet, I’d recommend you head there and you negotiate a fair deal to get to Canggu. The normal price is around IDR 29 000 to get to Berawa Road.  When I don’t use the app, I normally get a rate for IDR 35 000. To get Wi-Fi, you can sometimes get it at the airport, but it’s not always working.  If not, head to the Cocomart (away from the taxi drivers) and get the Wi-Fi there.

To reach that parking lot, you should head straight as soon as you leave the airport.  At some point, you’ll have to go left. And then, you’ll see motorbikes around wearing green jackets.

Also, you should note that the ATM is on the third floor (departures).  Personally, my cards don’t work there, so make sure you have some currency prior to your trip or ask the driver to bring you to another ATM.

Laundry in Canggu

The cheapest option I found so far is Merry Laundry located on Berawa’s road. MAPPPP It’s normally ready in the afternoon on the next day.

Motorbike & scooter rentals in Canggu

I do not trust all rental companies, so I always go for the same guy at Sinar Mart located on Berawa’s road. You can rent a scooter for IDR 50 000 per day, or get a weekly discount as well as a monthly discount. A monthly rate should be IDR 700 000 for a normal scooter or IDR 800 000 for a Scoopy scooter.

BEFORE YOU GO TO BALI

☑ Book your flight: If your flight isn’t booked yet – check out the flights on Skyscanner or via Google Flights. My top saving tip is flexibility. If you’re flexible, you should be able to find a cheaper flight.

☑ Book your accommodation: I always use Airbnb and Booking.com. If you’d rather stay in a hostel, you should take a look at the options on Hostelworld. If you click on the Airbnb link and you don’t have an account yet – you’ll get a $30 discount on your first booking.

☑ Protect your cute face: Oh, you may want to protect your cute face with a travel medical insurance. I would suggest SafetyWing as they offer the best rates, especially for long-term travelers. Otherwise, you can also take a look at World Nomads.

☑ Pack the essentials: You can consult this list when it’s time to pack your bag! Do not leave without a universal charger, a power bank and your passport!

☑  Do you need a visa? If you aren’t sure if you need a visa, it would be a smart idea to take a quick look before you go. You can use iVisa – it’s super useful and easy to use.
