After around 24 hours of flying and airport stopovers, followed by a 3 hour minibus journey, we finally arrived in South Africa! We flew from Manchester to Dubai, had some amazing sushi at the airport, and then flew to Johannesburg. I felt dreadful but was so excited to be in South Africa.
We were staying at a lodge in a reserve called Ant's Hill in an area called Vaalwater. Vaalwater is to the North East if South Africa, 3 hours north of Johannesburg. We were going to stay here for 1 week and had booked a luxury lodge called 'Hideaway'. Our lodge was beautiful. I think the pictures speak for themselves!
As well as luxurious lodges in Waterberg, there are some wonderful campsites as well that you can stay at. A short drive from Ant's Nest & Ant's Hill is the Matamba Bush Camp which I hear is one of the best campsites in the area..

Giraffes outside our lodge!
The holiday was a riding holiday, where you go on safari on horse-back. As a horse rider, this was just perfect for me. After having around 2 hours sleep, I wasn't ready to join in an activity that day. Instead we just chilled in our lodge and drank some tea. That evening, we enjoyed a lovely traditional South African meal. We had a meaty stew made using local game meats such as springbok. It was delicious.
